Listening Practice

Opening ZiMatch…

How to play

Start a round to hear a Chinese word spoken by your device's Mandarin voice. Choose its written Chinese form or its English meaning, depending on the selected direction. The prompt uses speech rather than displaying the answer first. Replay the word whenever you need another listen.

Use an untimed round while you learn the sound-to-word connection. Listen once without looking at the options, decide which syllables you heard, and then choose. If the options distract you from listening, look away during the first playback and return to the screen afterward.

A response produces feedback and then moves the round onward. After a miss, give the revealed answer your attention rather than racing to the next question. Review the missed words at the end. A focused lesson set is useful when you want to connect a small collection of written words with their pronunciations.

Controls

Use the visible answer buttons with touch, mouse, Tab or Enter. Replay is always available during a prompt. P controls pinyin when the game reveals written feedback. Listening prompts work independently of the optional Listen preference used for pronunciation in the other games. Your browser needs a Mandarin speech voice.

What it trains

This game connects an isolated spoken word with a written form or a meaning. Browser speech is a convenient practice aid, but voices differ by device and it does not reproduce the variety of natural conversation. Continue with short recordings, different speakers and sentences so you hear familiar words in context.

Tips for your next round

Wear headphones if the room is noisy. Repeat the word aloud after listening and compare its vowel and tone shape on replay. If speech is missing, check your operating system's language and speech-voice settings. Install a Mandarin voice through your device's normal settings; ZiMatch does not substitute an English voice for a missing Chinese one.

Questions before you play?

Why is there no sound?

Your browser may not have a Mandarin speech voice ready. Check the on-screen status, device volume and operating system voice settings.

Does Listen off disable this game?

No. Listening Practice needs its own spoken prompts and Replay control, independently of optional pronunciation feedback elsewhere.
