Reading games

Recognizing a written Chinese word starts with noticing the whole form. A familiar first character is a useful clue, but it can also lead you toward the wrong word when several choices share it. These games give you different ways to connect written forms with meanings: matching two cards, choosing a translation, and finding a target in a grid.

Begin with a small untimed set. Try to recall the meaning before selecting an answer, then use the feedback to check your guess. Keep pinyin available while a word is new and hide it when you want to test character recognition. Reversing direction asks a different question and can reveal a connection that is strong in only one direction.

A recognition game is one part of reading practice. After a round, choose a few words from the review and use them in short sentences. Read a lesson example aloud, then find the same words in connected material. The aim is to make the next encounter easier, not simply to finish more rounds. Your games share one learning record, so words you miss can return in another mode.
