Listening games
A word can look familiar on a page and still be difficult to recognize by ear. Listening practice starts from sound and asks you to connect it with a written word or a meaning. Listen to the prompt before reading the choices, make a prediction, and replay it if you need to compare a syllable or a tone.
The current listening game uses Mandarin speech available on your device. Voices and playback quality vary across operating systems, so check the game's voice status if you hear nothing. Replay is part of the exercise; there is no benefit in guessing simply because the first playback went by quickly. Untimed practice gives you room to listen and repeat.
Isolated words are a useful starting point, but everyday listening also involves rhythm, reduced syllables and context. Follow a game with a short recording and listen for one or two familiar words inside a sentence. Say an original sentence aloud with each word you missed. A short focused set can help you notice a sound contrast, while a separate conversation or recording helps you transfer that attention to natural speech.
