中国
China; 中 and 国 have separate character ranks in ZiMatch.
The number beside a Hanzi in the library is a character rank from one corpus-based list. It is not a word-frequency score, an HSK level, or a measure of how useful a word will be to you.
ZiMatch’s Word library displays a separate rank for each distinct Hanzi in a vocabulary item. For example, in 中国 (Zhōngguó, China), 中 is ranked 14 and 国 is ranked 20 in the bundled list. Those two numbers are not a rank for the whole word 中国.
The data is Jun Da’s 2004 character-frequency list based on the Modern Chinese Corpus. Its source page describes counts from both informative and imaginative texts. A corpus is a particular collection of texts, so a rank reflects that collection and its counting method, not every conversation, region, genre, or current source of Mandarin.
The HSK label in ZiMatch identifies the level and position of a word in the supplied New HSK vocabulary list. The character badge looks up one Hanzi at a time in a separate character list. A word can therefore have several character ranks and one HSK level.
Neither label gives a word-frequency rank. This app does not calculate how often a complete multi-character word appears, and its character ranks do not say whether the word is easy, important for your goals, or already learned.
“Not ranked” means ZiMatch has no rank for that character in the bundled frequency file. It does not mean the character has zero uses or is absent from every kind of Chinese text. Coverage limits and corpus choice matter.
Use a rank as a small clue for exploration: open a word in the library, inspect its pinyin and meanings, then look for the whole word in a sentence from your course or reader. Choose what to practice based on your current study goal and the contexts you want to understand, not a number alone.
